OpenAI Launches Images 2.6 With 50% Faster Generation and GIF Creation
November 5, 2026 - OpenAI has introduced Images 2.6, an update to its image-generation technology that adds animated GIF creation, faster image rendering, and more precise editing capabilities. Image 2.6 allows ChatGPT users to create animated GIFs using text prompts or uploaded images. Users can adjust playback speed, edit individual frames, and share the finished animations. The update also introduces reusable reference images, allowing users to save pictures of people, pets, and characters for future creations.
OpenAI says its platforms now generate more than 4 billion images every week across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API.
Two New Models for Developers
The API release includes GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst.
Flare focuses on faster generation and can produce images in as little as six seconds when the quality setting is low. It also improves layouts for posters and product visuals. Sunburst targets detailed image generation and maintains greater consistency across multiple editing rounds, particularly for characters, products, and brand elements.
Both models support image markup, SVG exports, and a new complexity setting. Developers can use image markup to identify specific areas for edits, while the complexity control adjusts how much planning the model applies to a request.
Availability
Images 2.6 is available across all ChatGPT subscription tiers on web, desktop, and mobile. It is also accessible through Codex. Developers can use Flare and Sunburst through the OpenAI API. OpenAI has not announced a separate subscription fee for the ChatGPT update.
