Sep 8, 2026 - Meta has launched Muse, a personal AI agent built to carry out tasks on a user’s behalf rather than only responding to instructions in a chat. The company says Muse can work across connected services to help with everyday activities, including managing schedules, shopping, travel, and communications.
Muse is currently being rolled out in the United States for users aged 18 and above. People can access it through a standalone app or WhatsApp, with Meta positioning the service as part of its broader effort to build personal AI assistants that can take action for users.
The agent can handle tasks such as drafting and sending emails, filling out forms, making purchases, and helping organize travel. Meta says users can also give Muse broader goals and allow it to work through the steps needed to complete them instead of providing instructions for every individual action.
The launch marks a shift from conversational
AI toward systems that can interact with other applications and services. Muse is intended to access areas such as email, calendars, payments, shopping, and other connected services when users grant permission.
Meta has placed particular emphasis on controlling what the agent can do. The company says Muse operates inside a dedicated virtual machine that separates the agent and user data from other systems. Its safety infrastructure is intended to assess actions before they are carried out, while users remain in control of which services Muse can access.
The rollout follows several months of work on reliability and security. Meta delayed the original launch while addressing concerns around autonomous actions, according to Reuters. Internal testing had also identified problems involving security, reliability, and the handling of private information.
Meta is presenting Muse as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s wider push toward what the company calls personal superintelligence. The longer-term goal is to build AI that can assist people across different parts of their lives rather than remaining limited to individual chatbot interactions.
For now, access remains limited to the US, meaning users in other markets cannot yet use the full Muse experience. Meta’s rollout will provide an early test of whether consumers are comfortable giving an AI agent access to the services and information it needs to act independently.
