Meta Expands AI Detection of Child Exploitation Content on Facebook & Instagram
October 8, 2026 - Meta is expanding its use of AI to detect child sexual exploitation content and advertisements across Facebook and Instagram. The move follows reports that hundreds of abusive AI-generated ads had appeared on its platforms, including material involving manipulated images of real children.
New AI Detection
Meta said a new LLM-based system can identify “signposting” in ads, language, or other signals that may direct users toward illegal exploitation material or services. The company is also using AI to examine where advertisements lead, rather than assessing the ad alone. A new AI red-teaming agent will test Meta AI’s moderation systems for weaknesses and help identify emerging evasion techniques.
Meta said it acted against 33.2 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content on Facebook and Instagram between January and June 2026. The company said it proactively detected more than 97% of it. In India, Meta reported action against 5.3 million pieces of such content, with more than 98% detected before user reports.
Following Reports of Abusive Ads
The update follows reporting by WIRED and research from the Tech Transparency Project that identified more than 350 abusive ads on Meta platforms. Some reportedly promoted AI-generated sexual content involving real children’s images.
Meta said it is also strengthening systems that identify repeat offenders who create new accounts after previous accounts are removed.
